The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), in collaboration with Bermeo Tuna World Capital (Bermeo Tuna) and the Basque Government, held the Level 2 Training Course \u2018Working Towards MSC Certification\u2019 from 2 to 5 February 2026, an advanced technical training programme aimed at strengthening capacities in the field of sustainable fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of these courses is to build capacity to interpret and apply the MSC fisheries standard; they form part of the organisation\u2019s training strategy to develop new skills for both future fisheries assessors and technical staff who may support fisheries undergoing improvement and certification processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course took place at the Port Authority offices at Erroxape Quay in Bermeo, and marks the third edition of the Level 2 Course to be held in Spain, following those held at the University of Alicante and the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona in 2017 and 2019, respectively. On this occasion, the training programme combined a preliminary series of online sessions, estimated to last 30 hours, with three intensive face-to-face sessions. This meant that participants arrived at the face-to-face sessions having already completed the theoretical modules, allowing classroom time to be devoted to practical exercises, the analysis of real-life case studies and the resolution of technical queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aimed at professionals in the fisheries sector, public sector staff, scientists, consultants and those responsible for fisheries improvement projects, the programme explores in depth the application of the MSC Fisheries Standard v2.01 and its three fundamental principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>P1: Sustainable fish stocks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P2: Minimising environmental impacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P3: Effective fisheries management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course covered assessment requirements, scoring criteria and tools for developing improvement plans, against a backdrop of growing interest in moving towards more sustainable and transparent fisheries management models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative forms part of the joint efforts by the sector and various institutions to strengthen the commitment of the entire tuna value chain to environmental, social and economic sustainability, as well as to establish Bermeo as an international centre of excellence in knowledge, specialised training and best practice in sustainable fisheries management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Side events with local partners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the course, a number of side events were also held, organised in collaboration with partners from Bermeo Tuna, at which participants had the opportunity to gain first-hand insight, in a relaxed setting, into how the MSC Standard is applied in the day-to-day operations of companies and organisations linked to the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These meetings provided an opportunity to share practical experiences on sustainability and certification, and concluded with a tasting of dishes made with MSC-certified products, thereby strengthening the link between the sustainable management of marine resources and the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3 February \u2013 Insights from the fleet. At the Alakrana restaurant, run by Echebastar. Participants will hear about the experiences of those who took part in the first MSC certification process for the tropical tuna purse seine fishery in the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 February \u2013 An overview of the processing sector. At the Conservas Arroyabe showroom, attendees will discuss the strategic value of working with certification bodies such as the MSC and market perceptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Education and the community: a school workshop on sustainable fishing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of our commitment to the local community, an educational workshop was held the day before in collaboration with Bermeo Town Council, aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 primary school pupils from schools in Bermeo: Eleizalde Ikastola, Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n Ikastetxea and San Frantzisko Herri Ikastetxea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The activity, which forms part of the MSC\u2019s primary school education programme, was delivered by Julio Agujetas and Isadora Moniz, fisheries officers at the MSC\u2019s office in Spain and Portugal, and introduced the pupils to key concepts relating to sustainable fishing, with a particular focus on tuna fishing, given its economic, social and cultural significance for the local community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bermeo, 3 February 2026.
