Bermeo’s three schools will begin working with the initiative’s teaching materials, which will introduce Primary Education pupils to the tuna and albacore value chain, sustainability and ocean protection.
Following its official presentation in Bermeo on 1 October, the TUNI Universe is now underway. This school year, Bermeo Tuna World Capital is launching the pilot phase of its educational project, developed in collaboration with UN Etxea – Basque Country Association for UNESCO and the town’s three schools. Its aim is to introduce younger generations to the tuna ecosystem and its importance for Bermeo and the blue economy.
In the coming weeks, participating schools will receive Bermeo Tuna’s educational materials and begin incorporating their content into classroom activities. Bermeo-San Frantzisko Herri Ikastetxea, Eleizalde Ikastola and Colegio Sagrado Corazón Ikastetxea will lead this first experience, which will test the educational approach and adapt it to the needs of pupils at different stages of Primary Education.
The project is structured around six learning scenarios combining activities and teaching resources to explore the tuna and albacore value chain, from fishing and scientific research to processing, marketing and consumption. Through characters such as TUNI, Bale, Errol, Klik, Kai, Itsas, Sare and Haize, pupils will also explore responsible consumption, product labelling, ocean protection and the role of women in maritime and fishing professions.
This school year will be crucial to the project’s development. The pilot will show how the materials fit into school activities, gather feedback from teachers and support further improvement of the educational resources alongside UN Etxea. Based on the lessons learned, Bermeo Tuna will explore opportunities to apply the project in other contexts, with the aim of gradually expanding its reach.
Through the TUNI Universe, Bermeo Tuna reinforces its commitment to education and outreach, connecting the local environment with global sustainability challenges. The project aims to help young people understand how the sea, people, economic activity and the care of marine resources are interconnected, encouraging a critical and responsible outlook on the future of the oceans.
The TUNI Universe will also feature at Bermeo Tuna Forum 2027
Education, outreach and the involvement of younger generations are also essential to moving towards a more sustainable tuna value chain. For this reason, the content and learning outcomes of the TUNI Universe will feature at Bermeo Tuna Forum 2027, taking place from 30 April to 2 May 2027 in Bilbao and Bermeo.
The TUNI Universe’s presence will highlight the role of education in building a culture of sustainability and bringing the challenges and opportunities of the blue economy closer to younger generations.
Because building the future of the tuna sector also means educating today those who will care for the sea tomorrow.
